Algil's Vineyards

Almost 100% of the Algil vineyards are planted with free-standing vines, a type of vineyard that is not grafted, thus giving the grapes the highest quality and making our wine different, exclusive and recognisable to taste and touch.

Vines planted in bush vines and with low planting densities. With very low annual rainfall, the vines are subjected to a controlled water stress that forces the plants to give their best, which is one of the secrets of Toro.

A surviving vineyard, forced to grow in extreme circumstances, forced to develop in extreme conditions, which develops a raw material of extraordinary quality.

This unirrigated area combines vines ranging in age from 25 years old for the youngest vines to 110 years old for the oldest vines.

San Roman
San Roman

San Román de Hornija

Located in the easternmost part of the Toro D.O., at an altitude of 700m, and crowning the top of the moor, are the vineyards of San Román.

A vineyard sheltered and surrounded by a mountain of pines and holm oaks in which the quaternary soils are the main protagonists. Sands and large boulders, unique in the Toro area, sit on a nutrient-poor substrate that gives our grapes unique characteristics.

The vineyard is divided into three plots totalling just 4 hectares of ungrafted vines. An ancestral heritage of one of the few areas in Europe that avoided phylloxera in the 19th century.

At Algil we have half a hectare of this gift of nature: a pre-phylloxera vineyard of about 110 years old that gives a distinctive character to our raw material.

The traditional Tinta de Toro is predominant in the Cuesta de la Majada and Los Quemados plots, although we also find here one of the few Garnachas in the area, which is used entirely for one of our most innovative proposals: Algil Garnacha, our 100% single varietal Garnacha de Toro.

Parcela la Majada

La Majada

Vineyard of 1 hectare of about 55 years old, planted by my grandfather Pepe. It is surrounded by holm oak and pine trees and located in the area of the “majada”, hence its name. Soil of pebbles and sand, grape variety Tinta de Toro and a little Garnacha.

Parcela los Quemaos

Los Quemaos

Older vineyard about 110 years old with an area of 0.5 ha (about 500 vines), planted by my father-in-law’s ancestors. It is 3 km from the Majada plot, on a plateau above the village of San Román de Hornija. Area where the soils no longer have that amount of pebbles, they are sandy and the peculiarity is some underground clays that help to keep the humidity in the dry summers, the variety is Tinta de Toro.

Morales de Toro

Morales de Toro

At an altitude of around 700 metres and barely 6 kilometres from the vineyards of San Román, the bulk of our plots are located.

15 hectares established in the locality of Morales de Toro that sits on silty/sandy soils with underground clays that work as sustenance for the hot and dry summers of the area.

The plots of El Manjano and La Hoyada give their name to a vineyard destined to draw the purest interpretation of our wines.

Nuestras variedades

The main grape of the Toro Denomination of Origin is Tempranillo, adapted to the region. It is the most widely planted variety in our vineyards (80%). A red variety that is considered the "noble grape" of Spain. Of great finesse and very aromatic, it provides wines of great quality and long ageing. Its flavour is very fruity and intense, with a characteristic ruby colour.
Garnacha
This variety is less and less present in the Toro Denomination of Origin and is usually used to accompany the Tinta de Toro, but in our case, we make it the protagonist through a single varietal. It is found in small proportions in our vineyards in San Román de Hornija. A red-coloured variety of Spanish origin, it has red fruit flavours (raspberry and strawberry) with a subtle note of white pepper. Garnacha wines are highly prone to oxidation and less intense in colour than tinta de toro.
Malvasía
One of the white grape varieties of the Toro Denomination of Origin, less and less present in the region's vineyards, which is why what remains of this variety is usually very old. In our vineyards we have little quantity of this grape but, on the other hand, what we do have is very old. It is found in the vineyards of Morales de Toro. White variety of Mediterranean origin, floral flavour and low acidity, its wines usually have delicate and fine aromas.
